International Climate Action Summit Concludes  with Malaibar Declaration on Climate Action

 

Kozhikode: The three day long discussions, debates and deliberations of academicians, scientists, policy makers, religious scholars and educational administrators from forty countries meeting at the International summit of International Leadership on climate action 2022 will culminate today with Malaibar Climate Action Declaration. The chairs of the summit, Dr. Usama Muhammed al Abd (General Secretary, League of Islamic Universities, Cairo)  and Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hakim al Kandi (Rector, Jamia Markaz, India) will jointly release the declaration signed by 200 member universities in the League of Arab Universities from 60 countries. The document will act as a roadmap for universities and educational institutions in their efforts to mitigate climate change and its impacts by limiting the warming of the planet to 1.5 degree Celsius. The Climate Action Summit was jointly organized by Kozhikode based Jamia Markaz and Cairo based League of Islamic Universities, confederation of more than 200 international universities from all over the world and the highest decision-making body of Arab- Islamic universities. The discussions and suggestions from the summit is expected to reflect in the Arab-Islamic countries positions in the  United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.


Dr. Usama Muhammed al Abd (General Secretary, League of Islamic Universities, Cairo) inaugurated the summit on Monday at Markaz Knowledge City in Kozhikode, Kerala. In his inaugural address to the summit, Dr. Usama al Abd stated that the consequences of climate change will result in revamping the existing global political equations and will result in the formation of new alliances.


“We are facing challenges that are structurally different from the past. Even a minor variation in the eco system in a remote village can have huge global impact. Human population across the globe is now entangled with each other in unprecedented ways. This demands policy makers and governments to resort to more international approaches towards issues such as climate change and come up with global solutions for even local issues”.- He added.


Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hakim al Kandi, co-Chair of the summit introduced the theme of the summit. He called for an adoption of an ethical approach in addressing climate change related issues. Dr.Muhammed Wassam Kidr (Director, Fatwa Council, Egypt), Dr.Mahir Khudair (Chief Judge, Supreme Religious Court, Palestine), Prof. Abdel Fattah Al Bazm (The Mufthi of Damascus,Syria), Sheik Muhammed Abdulrahman Faizy (Chairmain,Hajj committee, Govt. of Kerala), Dato Prof. Muhammed Zawwawi Bin Zain El Abidine (President, Sulthan Ahmed Shah islamic University,Malaysia), Dr.Hussain Muhammed Saqafi (Vice Chancellor, Jamia Markaz ,India) and Abdul Hakeem Faizy also addressed the inaugural session.


48 academicians and scientists presented papers in five sessions held in the last two days. The sessions on the final day will discuss theological perspectives on climate change, evolving forms of art, architecture technology in the time of global warming and the role of educational institutions and universities in addressing impacts of climate change.


An expo showcasing the latest inventions, devices, projects and schemes connected with climate action, is also organised in connection with the summit and is visited by hundreds of students and teachers.  A number of pre-summit events such as Inter-Generation Dialogues, Feel the Climate Programme, Eco Walk, Bird Watchers’ Evening, Afforestation Drive are also organized to reach out the message of the summit. The Afforestation Drive declared by Jamia Markaz in connection with the Climate Action Summit will cover over an area of 100 acres of land in India.
